TRAUMA SENSITIVE YOGA

What is Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga?

Developed at the Trauma Centre in Boston ,by David Emerson in clinical consultation with Bessel Van Der Kolk.Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga called TCTSY is an evidence-based somatic practice for survivors of trauma, traumatic stress, complex trauma or chronic treatment resistant post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Registered with SAMHSA.

TCTSY central components are based in Hatha Yoga, Trauma Theory, Attachment Theory and Neuroscience.

TCTSY is a safe way to process traumatic memory without words through the use of physical forms and movements of the body and breath. TCTSY differs from traditional yoga classes as there are no physical hands on or assists, rather the participant is given opportunities to make choices that are based on the felt sense of their own body.

TCTSY supports participants to:

  • connect with the sensations in their bodies

  • increase feelings of empowerment

  • rebuild and strengthen relationship to self and others

  • remain in the present moment

No yoga experience is needed, this program is available for all regardless of gender, identity, race, ethnicity, body type and physical ability.

As an adjunct therapy you will need to be in some form of therapy or have a therapist you can engage with as needed.

How is TCTSY different to Yoga?

In TCTSY the emphasis is on the internal experience of the participant. This is a key attribute of TCTSY as a complementary treatment for complex trauma.

With our approach, the power resides within the individual, not the TCTSY facilitator (TCTSY-F)

There is no ‘right way’ to do TCTSY. The participant chooses what is best for them in any given moment.

The  focus is on the felt sense of the body to inform choice-making, TCTSY allows participants to restore their connection of mind and body and cultivate a sense of agency that is often compromised as a result of trauma.

TCTSY does not use physical hands-on adjustments to influence a participant's physical form.

TCTSY presents opportunities for participants to be in charge of themselves based on a felt sense of their own body.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A CLASS/SESSION:

While TCTSY is based on gentle movement, its emphasis is on the internal experience of participants rather than mastering yoga poses or stretches. It’s not about ‘getting it right’; it’s about exploring and nurturing the inner self as you breathe and move.

By tuning into the body, TCTSY helps restore the connection between mind, body and emotions, empowering participants to make decisions that will guide their personal healing.

All classes respect and honour:

  • Privacy: No hands-on assists or adjustments.

  • Kindness: Invitational language is always used.

  • Choice: Different options and complete choice over what you do with your body.

  • Boundaries: No need to talk to others in group classes.

WHY TRAUMA CENTRE TRAUMA SENSITIVE YOGA
Lived experience of trauma affects so much more than an individual’s emotional and psychological wellbeing. Trauma also impacts the relationship with the body and how we move through the world and can have debilitating physical impact. In addition to effects such as anxiety, memory loss and dissociation, trauma can make victims more prone to serious chronic health conditions.

In the field of trauma recovery, body-focused treatment options are becoming an important part of multifaceted approaches to healing. Trauma Sensitive Yoga is one such body-led therapy that has been shown to reduce the symptoms of complex trauma and PTSD.
